American Red Cross Training
Lifeguarding with Waterpark Skills
This comprehensive American Red Cross lifeguard training program includes patron rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid, and CPR/AED through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice. Successful completion of this course will result in Red Cross certification. Class materials are included in the fee.
Perquisites:

- · Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
o Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed).
o Maintain position at the surface of water for two minutes by treading water using only the legs.
o Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
· Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
o Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (Face may be in or out of the water. Goggles not allowed).
o Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
o Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out or near the surface.
· Pre-Requisite testing will be done 4/27, 4/29, and 5/1 from 5:30 – 7:00pm at Bloomington High School Pool. You may RSVP to the pre-requisite session of your choice. Candidates who do not meet the requirements to participate in the lifeguarding course will be refunded for the full course minus a $25 testing fee.

Please note these classes are taught using Blended Learning, combining online learning with in-person skills sessions to practice and demonstrate competency. E-Learning materials will be shared two weeks prior to class and must be completed before the first day of in-person training (approx. 6 hours online)
Junior Lifeguarding (Ages 11-14)
Junior Lifeguarding is an exciting program designed to turn swimming skills into life-saving knowledge. Participants will build water safety awareness while learning essential lifesaving skills, including in-water rescues, use of rescue equipment, and First Aid, CPR?AED training. Each participant will also have the opportunity to shadow a certified lifeguard. While this program does not guarantee future employment as a lifeguard, it’s an excellent foundation toward achieving that goal.
Pre-Requisites:

· Swim front crawl for 25-yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
· Swim breaststroke for 25-yards using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.
· Complete the Water Competency Sequence:
o Step into water from the side and totally submerge.
o Maintain position for one minute by treading water or floating (or a combination of the two).
o Rotate one full turn and orient to the exit. Level off and swim on the front or back 25-yards.
o Exit pool without using a ladder or steps.
